Saying Goodbye

This post was written on Thursday...sorry it's a little late!

We just finished packing up all of our stuff into a giant moving truck (thanks so much to Eric, Jon, Zac, & Josh). It's hard to believe we're really doing it; we're moving!

A few people have asked me if I'm sad to leave our house. I have to stop and think about it. Sad? Not really. I think I am too excited to be sad. Although our house does have a lot of great memories.

It's the first home we've ever owned. We created memories that will stick with me, like having countless friends over for dinner. Having our parents and siblings stay with us. Hosting small group and worshiping together with the windows open (for some reason I will always remember that night). Leaving for the summer to live in the Philippines (thanks to Zac & Traci for housesitting while we were away). Starting my business in our front office. Making the office into a nursery. And my favorite memory, bringing Callie home from the hospital to her first home.

All of this talk about homes reminds me of the fact that this home is temporal, as well as our next home. As fun and exciting as it is to paint, decorate, and plan, these homes will not last forever. Most importantly, we have an eternal home in heaven.

Looking around, I've realized that we put a little bit of work into this house! One of our first projects was a tile back splash. I saw this tile in a display at IKEA (the tile was from The Tile Shop, not Ikea). My parents were so nice to come up and help us with it. It took a whole weekend. It was a lot of work, but I think it added a lot to the kitchen.

This was a fun and easy project -- painting the front door black.

And my favorite project of all, wood floors. Thanks to my parents-in-law that came to help us with this! It was a ton of work; moving the appliances out of the kitchen, measuring and cutting each piece. But well, well worth it! Too bad we couldn't enjoy them for longer! Kyle picked out the floors from Home Depot.

An easy project, we added hardware to our cabinets (purchased from Pottery Barn, but they no longer well them). I love the look of cup pulls. I think I will probably also do this in our new house.

These bamboo shades were fun. We bought them at Target. Too bad I have to leave them with the house!

Of course I just had to update our light bulb fixtures with something a little more stylish!

Okay, so I went a little crazy with the chair rail and panel molding. I just love white molding. The more the better (to a certain extent I guess).

And some new faucets and towel bars in the bathrooms. Look close and you can see me in my green sweatshirt. :) But don't look too close because you will see that they are a little dirty!

This post was fun to write because now I can remember bits and pieces of our old house, and the work we put into it. Nothing major, just little things here and there.

Okay, just an update to let you know that we've moved in our new place! Thank you soooo much to our friends and family for all of the help -- Ben, Dan, Todd, Ryan, Matt, Kiley, Elyse, Annie, Brian, and Debbie!!! We couldn't have done it without you.

Baby Land

I can hardly believe how many babies I have seen in the last few months! It's been so much fun to meet so many friends' little ones. I have even had the opportunity to take some pictures of some of them, and I just realized that I have a real collection here.

Thanks, everyone, for letting me practice my photography skills on your little babes!

If you are wondering what camera I shot most of these pictures with, I have a
Canon EOS Rebel XSi.

Thanks for looking!

Crockpot Salsa Chicken

Because this is literally one of the easiest things to make, I thought I would share my shredded salsa chicken recipe. This chicken is great for tacos, enchiladas, salads, soups, you name it. And it takes no effort. The name pretty much says it all.

Make sure you dust off your crockpot!

Chair 055

Ingredients:
2-3 chicken breasts, seasoned (I like Goya's adobo, but salt works too)
1 cup salsa

Directions:
Put chicken breasts (whole) in crockpot with salsa. Cook on medium for a few hours until chicken is cooked through. Shred chicken with fork, and let cook for another half hour or so with remaining liquid (that will be in the bottom of the crockpot).

Ta da!

Less time in the kitchen = more time playing with these cute legs.

Blood, Sweat, & Tears

Well, maybe there was no blood. But it sure was a lot of work. For some reason, I decided to try and reupholster a wing back chair that I found at a garage sale. Actually, maybe I do know why. At the upholstery shop, it costs $350-500, just for the labor. Now that I've done it, I can see why {the tutorial I followed can be found here}. But anyway.

Here is the Before:

Biscuit 066

And, are you ready? With the help of a staple gun and some hot glue...

The After:

Chair 094

I must warn you. Do not look too closely.

Chair 096

See? I warned you {I am not known for my precision.} Actually, it's not quite done. If you look closely, you will see that I still need to sew a cover for the cushion. I don't have a sewing machine at the moment, so I just wrapped it in extra fabric for this picture.

The stats:
Old chair at a garage sale... $25
Floral fabric for chair... $40
Having a new piece of furniture for our new house... priceless!

One more warning. Make sure not to scratch your hardwood floors when you move it by the window to take a picture.

And definitely do not let your child play with a pen while you work.

Biscuits, French Alphabet, & More

I hope you all are having a nice Wednesday! Is it me, or is this week going super fast? In one of my last posts, I mentioned that Callie was acting like she was teething. Well, same story today (and yesterday, etc.). I still don't see any teeth, but I'm not sure what else can explain this crabbiness! She's still a sweetie, just not the perfect angel I thought she was {why does this surprise me since we all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God and need the forgiveness of a Savior. Even sweet little Callie}.

So anyway, we gave her some wheat teething biscuits and let her make a mess with them. Can you say yummy?

I just love this French Alphabet Poster. I'm a little devastated that it's sold out {and is limited edition unfortunately}. It would have been the perfect poster to hang in Callie's new bedroom! That got me wondering if it would be possible to make one that's similar. Steph {she's my go-to DIY girl}??? :)

Speaking of DIY, I don't know what took over me when I decided I needed to reupholster a wingback chair. All by myself. With no previous experience. {Actually, I do know what took over me. I needed to channel my "new house" energy into some sort of project or else I would go mad sitting here and thinking about it all day!}

Man, what a tough job! I worked on it most of the day yesterday, and this morning too. The best part? Picking out the new fabric. The worst part? Removing the old staples. I've snapped a "before" shot, and as soon as it's ready for an "after" short, I'll get back to you!

Back to the babe, Callie has been so tired lately.

Biscuit 017

She's been taking much longer naps, and seems to still be tired as soon as she wakes up. Hopefully she's just recovering from her fever she had last week and is nothing serious.

Did I say she was sweet? Don't you just want to eat her up?

Bits of Our Weekend

This picture pretty much sums up our weekend, so far. Today was rough. Poor baby hasn't been feeling too well the past few days, and even had her first official fever. Praise God that it is now back down to normal. She's asleep in her crib, which is such a blessing because the last few nights (in our bed) were pretty sleepless, for her and for us.

Pacifier 063

Pacifiers are definitely a life saver at times, aren't they? It's so nice to be able to "pacify" her by giving her one when out in public, before a nap, and at bedtime. I also appreciate the fact that while she's sucking on one, she's not putting everything imagineable in her mouth (like usual). However, I am getting a little concerned that she's really liking them now. She will find them around the house and stick them in her mouth and if it were up to here, I think she would be sucking on one all day (and all night). The word "addicted" comes to mind. I'm a little afraid of what the future might hold when we decide to take them away. Any thoughts or suggestions on this topic?

Pacifier 069

We are still liking our Magic Bullet! I didn't think I would use it for much besides baby food, but it is so much easier to use than a blender. I think I use it almost every day, for something or other! We make smoothies for breakfast. I may be a little behind on this discovery, but Super Target has great frozen fruit (at very low prices). I think this bag of frozen mangoes was only $1.77.

Pacifier 081

Here's a little picture of Callie all bundled up. We try hard to keep our little Minnesota baby warm! I found this BundleMe on Craigslist last year (unused) for $15, and we're still using it this year! I think we are definitely getting our money's worth.

Pacifier 026

Yesterday was supposed to be our "closing day." We were all packed up and ready to go. Unfortunately, our buyer needs some more time, so we are now on "pause" and are still in our current house. We're not sure now what day we will be closing exactly, but it should be sometime before the end of October. Is this the Lord trying to teach me patience? Because I don't have time for it. :)

I've been cleaning out our freezer lately. It's pretty much empty except for a few pieces of frozen meat and some frozen breastmilk (sounds appetizing, I know). And this. Look what I found in the back of the freezer. Does anyone recognize it, perhaps?

Pacifier 086

Good guess. Our wedding "cakes," petit fours. Should we still eat them, on our anniversary in January 2010? Do you think they would still be good?

10 Reasons It's A Rough Day

rough day

1. I took a short {10 minute} nap this afternoon, and mom didn't immediately get me out of my crib {because she wanted to see if I would fall back to sleep. No such luck}.

2. Mom will not let me play with the cords to the TiVo. But I love those cords, they are so much fun!

3. I might be teething. I'm not sure yet, mom can't see any teeth. But I just might be. I'm definitely acting like it.

4. My face gets all red and puffy when I cry {just like my mom's does}.

5. I reallllly want to play with mom's blackberry. But she takes it away from me every time I get it. All the buttons look like so much fun. Can I have a blackberry, too?

6. Lots of my toys are put away in storage or packed in the garage {because we are moving soon}. I mean, what am I supposed to play with?

7. I shoved too many Cheerios in my mouth today at lunch and almost started to choke. Almost {she's fine, don't worry}. I'm really starting to love Cheerios.

8. The snow. At the beginning of October. If I was more than 8 months old, I might know that it's way too early for snow.

9. Mom keeps sticking her camera in my face.

10. I miss my Grandmas!!! Come visit me soon!

Love, Callie
