Callie's Birth Story

My due date was Friday, January 23rd, and because I was hoping my baby would be born that day, I had absolutely nothing on the calendar! The 23rd came and went with no signs of labor. However, I had a wonderful day, which included a last-minute Target run, cleaning the house (again), a nap, and reading more from my birthing books. The day ended perfectly with a dinner date with Kyle and watching a movie at home. At dinner, we wondered if this would be our last date pre-baby, but that's something we had been asking ourselves for the last two weeks!

For some reason, I woke up the next morning at 5:30am. I felt like my water might have broken and started to feeling some minor cramps, but wasn't sure. So, I woke up Kyle and then called the midwife to ask about it. She said that when my water broke there would be no question, so that probably wasn't it, but the cramps could be a sign of the start and to call back if anything else comes up, get some rest and eat something. I was excited that this could be it!

Surprisingly, even with the excitement of knowing I could be going into labor, I fell back asleep and didn't wake up again until 8am. I thought the cramps I was feeling were early contractions, but I knew those could happen for a few days. I took a shower, made breakfast, and we ate together around 10:30. By this time, I was sure I was having contractions because they were becoming regular at 30 minutes apart. We started timing them and calling our families to tell them the news.

I was expecting to stay home all day through contractions and didn't think I would need to go to the hospital until later that night, so I took my time packing my back (it was already half-packed). Suddenly, right after calling our families, my contractions got extremely close together, one after the other. Here's what we have written down for the timing between: 30 minutes, 11 minutes, 5 minutes, 8 minutes, 3 minutes, 2 minutes...

I felt like taking a bath at home, but Kyle thought we should leave for the hospital. I thought that was ridiculous and told him we probably wouldn't be going in until much later that day. I didn't want to be one of those people who show up too early and then are sent back home. He said, "all right, but we need to call the midwife and ask." I didn't know what was going on because this was not a "textbook" labor, and I was pretty confused. At one point, I thought I must just be having one super-long contraction (I had no idea)! I couldn't be that far along in labor this soon!

Kyle called the midwife and she said we should come right it. At this point, the contractions were getting really painful really fast, and when Kyle left the room to go pack the car, he would find me bent over on the floor almost crying. He was freaking out (with visions of me delivering in the house or the back seat of the car), and I told him to stop freaking out because he was making me anxious and that we had still had plenty of time! We threw a few things in our bags and left the house at noon.

In the 20-minute drive to the hospital, I was laying in the back seat with a bunch of pillows and pretty much felt like I was going to die. I really wanted a natural childbirth (no medical interventions/drugs), but I thought this was just the beginning of labor and it was going to get way worse, and I couldn't take much more. So I told Kyle, "I don't really care. I can't do this. I want an epidural." He told me, "Nealy, you can do it! I don't think that's really what you want, but we'll see."

We pulled up at the emergency room door around 12:20. It took everything in me to just get out of the car. While in the waiting room, all I remember was falling to my knees near a chair, and a guy asking if we needed a wheelchair. They pushed me upstairs and I (still) felt like I didn't know if I could take the pain!

We got to our room and I sent Kyle to run down to get our bags, because the camera and everything we "needed" were in there. He ran down as fast as he could to get our stuff, afraid he might miss something.

After about 15 minutes of being at the hospital, our midwife checked to see how far dilated I was. I was still thinking that I had hours and hours to go. To my absolute surprise, I was already dilated to 9 centimeters! She thought I would be pushing within an hour. I couldn't believe it! My baby would be here soon! This news gave me the strength I needed to finish. I could handle the pain for a little bit longer. What I finally understood was that I was in transition (known as the hardest part of labor) when I thougth that I was just at the beginning!

I started pushing around 1:15pm (about an hour after arriving at the hospital) and Callie was delivered at 2:51pm. Amazingly, I did it completely naturally the way I originally wanted to. We had a super fast labor with no complications and a healthy baby girl at the end.

And the whole time, Kyle was right there, even "pushing" along with me (the midwife said he needed to take a deep breath too). I couldn't have done it without him; he was so supportive and helpful. And just to think that if it weren't for him, I probably wouldn't have made it to the hospital on time!

We feel that God has truly blessed us with this baby. Looking back, it seems that He worked everything out perfectly. We truly feel the praise and glory all go to God, because this perfect and precious gift is from Him. Callie has changed our lives forever. We've been praying for her for 9 months and God has been so faithful. We are so thankful!

"I prayed for this child, and the Lord has granted me what I asked of him."

We've Survived!

Just a quick update, I know everyone is anxious to hear the details!

We are now home from the hospital. We loved where we delivered, but it's so nice to be home! We've been dreaming about the day we would take our little baby to her new home, so it's fun that this time is here! We love being a family of three, it's so neat.

Callie is doing great. We think she gets just cuter every minute, and she is so much fun. The first night went surprisingly well! She woke up just about exactly every 2 hours to eat, all night. That doesn't leave too much sleep time for mom, but we are thankful she didn't cry much either. She's a great baby, perfectly healthy, and we are totally in love with her!

I will post more pictures and info as we have time. Oh, we would just love visitors! We're around all week, so if you want to stop by and meet our cutie, give one of us a call to set up a time. Wednesday or Thursday would probably work best for us.

Thank you so much for those of you who have offered to bring us meals, we appreciate it so much. Erica brought our first dinner last night, and it was sooooo awesome (and yummy). We appreciate how helpful everyone has been. Thank you!

Calling All Moms: A Poll

For the last few weeks, there's been one specific question that I've been interested in hearing the answer to...

How soon or late did you have your first baby?

As I'm sitting here, just one day before my "due date," I'm wondering what it's been like for other moms?

If you read this and it applies to you, please answer my poll (top right of this blog). Oh, and feel free to leave a comment with any stories or advice on labor and everything...

Thanks!

Waiting...

No baby yet!

With only three days to go, we are still waiting. It's hard to believe my due date is just about here! It's such a funny feeling, knowing that all of the plans that I make at this point are tentative. It could be any minute, or even two weeks late (let's hope not)! At one of my baby showers, we all guessed the date she would be born, and my guess was January 20th. I think that's today...

Kyle's been bringing his computer home from work every night now, just incase, so he doesn't have to go back to get it! It's cute because he always wants to make sure that our cars have full tanks of gas - how thoughtful! I have my bags packed for the most part, but I only have so many clothes that fit, so I'm finding myself doing laundry almost every day!

I got the "40-week" pedicure yesterday. Can you guess what color I chose? Pink of course! I think the lady rubbed my feet for and extra long time. How sweet...it was awesome!

I made my 40-week appointment at the clinic yesterday, and the lady at the reception desk asked me, "what week appointment is this, 28 weeks?" I was like, "no, it's 40!" That was kind of funny. Maybe she doesn't see many pregnancies?!?

Well, I will try to keep you posted if there are any updates! Please keep us in your prayers.

Our Nursery!

Here's a snapshot of our nursery for those who haven't seen it yet. It's all ready for our baby to come home, and I finished hanging the last shelf on the wall yesterday. The letters of our little girl's name will go right above her crib on the wall; I may have to post a picture of that at a later time! =)

A special thank you to Ranya for sewing the slipcover for our beautiful glider. Ranya, you're awesome...thank you so much for all of your help with that. That was sure a lot more work than I expected it to be. It looks great!!!

As I've mentioned before, my friend Brianna did some cute maternity photos for us a few weeks ago. They turned out great! Bri is such a talented photographer, the pictures turned out great. I've posted some of my favorites from our shoot at our house.

Check out her photography blog here - I would definitely recommend her if you are needing pictures taken - family, children, baby, anything.

Thanks again, Bri!

Family Christmas Photo!

Just wanted to share a picture of the beautiful L family this Christmas! Kyle's cousin Michelle recently married Joel, who just happens to be a professional photographer. The picture turned out great. Thanks, Joel! I can't wait to see the rest!

Baby Shower Number Three!

This Christmas, the L family threw me a surprise baby shower!

It was so much fun, and so sweet of them to take the time to plan everything. I never expected that I would have 3 baby showers! I loved it because so much of the L family came: Kyle's mom, sisters, aunts, cousin, second cousins, grandmother, great aunt...I just love how close their family is, what a special thing they have! Everyone definitely showered me with gifts and support.

Thank you to the L's for such a sweet shower! _____ says thank you, too (kick-kick)!

These are all the pictures that I have, so if you were there and have any others and want to send them my way, that would be great!

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year to everyone! Wow, I can't believe that it is 2009 already! Isn't it crazy that another year has gone by? I think this one will be quite an exciting one for us.

We celebrated our last (non-parent) New Years Eve with a date downtown. I was quite impressed with myself for 1) dressing up, (low) heels and all; 2) leaving the house in below-zero weather; and 3) not wishing I was home on my couch the whole time; at this point in my pregnancy! =)

We went to 112 Eatery, a place we've been wanting to try. I loved the atmosphere - there were candles lit everywhere. I was jealous the whole time of Kyle's cheeseburger (who orders a cheeseburger at a gormet restaurant on New Years Eve?!?). However, it was not your ordinary burger - it had melted brie cheese all over it, on an English muffin, and it was really good! He even offered to trade (what a sweetie), but I stuck with my risotto. The chocolate pot de creme for dessert was amazing...the best chocolate pudding I've ever had...really...hardly can be called pudding! We had a lot of fun looking back on '08 and looking forward at '09. Thanks, sweetie, for our last fun date of '08!

Now the real question is...did I manage to stay up until midnight?!?!
